How to perform a working distances calibration with PLX-HotStage
This operation takes about 3 minutes. It involves finding the height of the profilometer and indenter tip, relative to that of the LVDT, allowing use of the LVDT to monitor the height of the sample surface. The procedure is as follows:
Position the crosshead and place the LVDT and Working Distances calibration sample on the platen, as described in Section 1. The LVDT and working distances calibration sample is simply a flat piece of metal with minimal surface roughness and tilt – the user could use another suitably prepared metallic sample if they misplace the PLX provided sample.
- Go to Tools > Calibrate > Working Distances. When ready, click ‘Start’.
- A dialogue box appears. Enter the calibration sample thickness (this can be found on the calibration sample and sample box) and click ‘OK’.
- The indenter housing moves downward until the indenter touches the sample surface.
- The indenter housing is retracted.
- The profilometer moves across to the (x, y) location of the indentation axis.
- The profilometer moves down until it touches the sample surface.
- The profilometer is retracted and then returned to its parked position.
- A dialogue box appears. The procedure is then terminated by clicking ‘Finish’.
- Retrieve and store the calibration sample.
