How to perform an LVDT calibration with PLX-HotStage
This operation takes about 90 seconds. It correlates the signal of the LVDT with the crosshead displacement. The procedure is as follows:
Position the crosshead and place the LVDT and working distances calibration sample (provided by PLX) on the platen. The LVDT and working distances calibration sample is simply a flat piece of metal with minimal surface roughness and tilt – the user could use another suitably prepared metallic sample if they misplace the PLX provided sample.
- Go to Tools > Calibrate > LVDT. When ready, click ‘Start’.
- A dialogue box appears. Ensure that there is no sample in the HotPIP platen and click ‘OK’.
- The indenter housing moves downward until the crosshead touches the LVDT.
- The indenter housing moves downward at a fixed (slow) speed, periodically recording the LVDT output signal.
- The indenter housing is retracted so that the crosshead is clear of the LVDT.
- A dialogue box appears. The procedure is then terminated by clicking ‘Finish’.
- Retrieve the calibration sample or leave it in place if moving on to the Working Distances calibration.
