Sample preparation for a PLX-HotStage test
Minimal preparation of your samples is required
The only requirement of PIP regarding sample preparation is that the region concerned should be flat and relatively smooth.
- The sample needs to have two parallel sides, such that the surface to be indented is well supported.
- The sample should be prepared to a suitable surface finish, recommended to be a P1200 grit grind or finer.
- The test can tolerate an incline between the support surface and the indented surface of up to 2˚.
- Samples can NOT be mounted.
- If microstructural features such as rotated grains and persistent slip bands around the indent are going to be imaged, it is recommended that the surface be polished.

Note: the surface roughness adjacent to an indent is measured as part of every PIP test. If the roughness is too high, the user will be notified.
